Parent Manual Highlights

Parking Lot: Please do not block drive, park under the canopy or enter the wrong way for the safety of all.  There are parking spaces for pick up and drop off in addition to pulling beside the curb.  Be aware of the cones. We do have buses coming through our parking lot and dropping off/ picking up so please go slow and watch for children. Do not pass stopped school buses. If you are picking up and do not want to be behind the bus, please pull down beside the curb closer to the playground and storage building. Children should be escorted in and out by an adult. PLEASE MONITOR CHILDREN IN THE PARKING LOT - CARS ARE FREQUENTLY MOVING AND MAY NOT SEE SMALL CHILDREN.

Inclement Weather: We follow PCS procedures. You may receive an automated phone call (may be from South Elementary) with instructions for the day. School regularly starts at 8 am, if there is a 1 hour delay = students should arrive between 9-9:15 am / 2 hour delay = between 10-10:15 am. Even though we are starting later, lunches have to be ordered and attendance must be taken so please be prompt with arrive or call 30 minutes before arrival time. Also on days with 2 hour delays, breakfast is not served.

Classroom Telephones pages: Each classroom has a phone and messages are checked throughout the day. If there is an emergency, please press 0 or 24227 for school office personnel. Telephones are on "Do Not Disturb" during instructional times (9 am- 12 pm and 2-3 pm), if you leave a message staff will respond to it during nap time or after 3 pm. You can email teachers too.

Arrival & Departure: School begins at 8 am and ends at 3 pm. Staff will be available under the canopy from 8:00- 8:30 am to receive students. Before & After care is available, please speak to office personnel if you need these services. Before 7:00 -8:00 am and after care 3:00-4:30 pm, please knock (door under canopy) for staff. From 9 am until 3 pm, please use the intercom system to the left of the door or follow instructions posted on the door. All children should arrive by 9 am unless you have an appointment or emergency, however staff should be informed prior to your arrival. Please call by 8:30 am to let staff know you are planning to attend school. We do ask that you arrive before 10:30 am to attend school for the day. Our instructional time begins at 8:20 am with small groups so we encourage families to get your child here between 8 and 8:20 am. 

Authorized Persons: People picking up/ dropping off must be 18 years old and have photo identification for us to verify and be listed on the Emergency Authorization/ Information Form. If an emergency occurs and you need to send someone else, please call prior to their arrival and they need to be 18 years old with I.D. You are responsible for updating these forms as needed. 

Transportation: Bus transportation is provided for the Exceptional Children's program. Please request during orientation. Buses do switch pick up/ drop off routines for shorter periods of time or just the day. The routes are set. You need to update information on their forms as needed/ when changes occur and people (18 years old) getting children off/ on the bus should be listed on that form. If you are not at the designated pick up/ drop location, the bus will not wait and children will be returned to school. If this happens more than once, you may be suspended from bus services, and if your child is returned to the school, that is after school care time and you will be charged a fee. Call the school if there is an emergency.

Admission: Please complete all forms (Physicals/ Health Assessment must be on file within 30 days - Nurse Mariana will be in contact with families concerning medical information.); We require a copy of your child's certified birth certificate.; Classroom - each child is asked to bring a box of tissue and (body) wipes, 2 complete set of changing clothes, backpack (standard size to hold a folder), bottle of hand sanitizer and if medication or adaptive devices are needed please speak with your child's teacher/ nurse to complete forms required. We are not responsible for lost items, please put your child's name inside of all clothing/ on backpacks, etc. 

Dress Code: We follow the PCS dress code. We do ask that children are dressed appropriately for play. Please read this section in the manual carefully. We do ask that students wearing skirts and dresses, please wear a pair of shorts under them for active play. We play outside!!! Sneakers/ closed toed shoes are the best and safest for outdoor play. 

Educational Program: Please review our schedule and look through our classroom to see the set-up of centers. We do have a an app named Class DOJO and Facebook page where you can see our students engaged in activities. We have several curriculums (Letterland, Number Worlds, Handwriting Without Tears, CSEFEL- social/ emotional, Creative Curriculum) we use to keep us aligned with North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Developmental. We encourage the students to share their interests to develop lesson plans and activities. 

Volunteers/ Chaperone/ Parent Participation: Must complete the PCS's volunteer form online and it must be approved by the Board of Education. Please read field trip information in the parent manual.

Discipline and Behavior Management Guidelines: Please Read

Health Guidelines: Please Read -  If your child is behaving differently, we will call you to see if something is different, change in schedule, illness or sleep pattern. If they have a low fever, we will call to let you know and let you decide how to proceed. If they have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea and/or not able to participate, we will call you to pick your child up and keep them out for 24 hours. 24 Hours Example: If your child left school sick at 10 am then 24 hours is 10 am the following day. Your child is not permitted to attend school the following day. Please review the medications, procedures and treatments. Appropriate forms will need to be completed for medication to be given.  

Please be mindful of fragrances from personal care products (lotions, cologne, perfumes, etc.), air fresheners, candles and cleaning products have been associated with adversely affecting a person’s health including headaches, upper respiratory symptoms, shortness of breath, and difficulty with concentration. People with allergies and asthma report that certain odors, even in small amounts, can cause asthma symptoms. We will work with all staff and families to ensure that everyone’s personal health are of the utmost importance, and products used in the workplace are fragrance-free.

Emergency Preparedness/ Evacuation Plan: Evacuation plan is available if you want a copy. If the school has to be evacuated, we will be moved to South Elementary or Southern Middle School. 

Diapers and Toilet Training: Parents must provide disposable diapers and wipes for children who are not toilet trained. You are responsible for maintaining your child's supply; suggestion to bring a pack and staff will alert you when more is needed. Please read the section on soiled clothing carefully. We are not permitted to wash or rinse soiled clothing.

Health and Nutrition Practices: All children and adults are required to wash their hands when they enter the classroom. This practice is for health and sanitation guidelines. Please do not allow students or siblings to enter and remove toys from the shelves without proper handwashing practices. Person County Schools provide balanced meals and snacks for us. If your child has dietary restrictions or other feeding concerns, please speak with your child's teacher and the nurse to complete the proper paperwork. Otherwise, school meals will be provided by PCS.

Late Pick-Up Policy:  The center closes promptly at 4:30 pm. Please call if there is a situation/ emergency and you are going to be late. Also please be aware there is a late fee for picking up at 4:30. Be considerate and remember afternoon care staff have responsibilities and personal obligations to attend to after closing. Be on time.

Preschool Fees Policies: Please speak to school office personnel regarding fees. Classroom staff can take payments and the office personnel will send a receipt back. 

PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW STUDENTS TO EAT IN THE HALLWAY, PLAY ON THE CHAIR AT THE FRONT DESK OR WITH THE SIGN, AND WRITE IN OUR SIGN IN/ OUT BOOK. PLEASE MONITOR YOUR CHILD WHILE THEY ARE ON THE SCHOOL PROPERTY - DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO GO TO THE CAR OR BE IN THE PARKING LOT, BE IN THE CLASSROOM, ON THE OFFICE HALL AT THE WATER FOUNTAIN OR OTHER AREAS WITHOUT YOU BEING PRESENT.
