Counselor's Corner

School Counselors Make a World of Difference

Mission:

The mission of Person Early College Student Services program is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that supports our students in Career and College preparation, their academic endeavors, their personal, social and emotional growth through Character Education and in partnership with parents, guardians and all members of the school community. The goal is to provide a safe and supportive academic environment both physically and emotionally. We want to inspire our students to be life-long learners, and respectful, responsible and productive citizens.

The Role of the School Counselor

According to the American School Counselor Association, “Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, career and social/emotional development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.”

About the Counselor:

I'm originally from Adams County in Pennsylvania & I currently reside in Durham, NC.  I am a 1989 graduate of York College of Pennsylvania with a BA degree in English.  I then continued my education and received my teacher’s license in 1994.  I worked as a Language Arts teacher in Chatham, Wake and Durham counties for 19 years.  I received my master’s degree in School Counseling in 2015 from Capella University.  I consider it an honor to have worked at Person Early College of Innovation and Leadership since it opened in 2016.  I enjoy working with students and having the opportunity to make a positive difference in their lives.

My primary responsibility is to help students achieve their educational goals by being part of the educational team.  However, many times personal and social issues are barriers to these goals.  I address academic, social and personal needs in individual and group settings so that they can be the best student and person they can be.

I work with our college liaison to serve as a resource to prepare our students and their parents for life after high school.
